All rights reserved.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Amsterdam has the\u00a0Anne Frank House. \u00a0Haarlem has the Corrie Ten Boom Museum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6518 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8944.png?resize=200%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8944.png?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8944.png?resize=768%2C1151&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8944.png?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8944.png?w=1366&amp;ssl=1 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>During World War II, many Jews knew of a hiding place in Haarlem&#8230;19 Barteljorisstraat, the site of the Ten Boom family&#8217;s watchmaking business. \u00a0With the comings and goings of the business&#8217;\u00a0many customers, it was the perfect hiding place since it did not arouse suspicion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Corrie, the youngest of the four Ten Boom children, the first\u00a0female licensed as a watchmaker in Holland\u00a0and a devout Christian, realized the horrors that were coming to pass in the Netherlands and decided that she and her family had the opportunity to help those in need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6510 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8917.png?resize=660%2C990&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8917.png?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8917.png?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8917.png?resize=768%2C1151&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/snappingtheglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8917.png?w=1366&amp;ssl=1 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Arriving in Haarlem, I made my way to the Corrie Ten Boom museum near the Grote Markt. \u00a0Standing in the alley, I watched the tour guides arrive and enter the museum and other tourists approach and wait patiently behind me in line. \u00a0As the clock on nearby St. Bavo&#8217;s church\u00a0chimed\u00a0the top of the hour, we were escorted into the museum and up the stairs into the Ten Boom&#8217;s former living room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I knew that this was an important museum. \u00a0I knew that Jews had hidden here in this home, but among those in my group, I was the only person who had not read Corrie&#8217;s book, &#8220;The Hiding Place&#8221; nor did I really know the story behind\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our tour guide narrated a tale for half an hour, detailing Corrie&#8217;s childhood, the impending Holocaust and how the family came to assist those in need. \u00a0We moved into Corrie&#8217;s bedroom and observed the secret room\u00a0behind the false wall which served to hide as many as seven people at a time, including Jews and members of the Dutch underground. \u00a0Additional refugees would stay with the Ten Booms for a few hours or a few days until another &#8220;safe house&#8221;
